Eat.: Flavor Profiles

Recipes are a guide. A guide that is used to create a masterpiece. In the kitchen you should BYOC, Be Your Own Chef, allowing recipes to spark creativity and innovation.

For #MealMonday, I wanted to introduce my personal technique for taking a protein(meat or non-meat), vegetable, and starch and creating a healthy, nutritious, and delicious meal that is easy on the wallet and explores different cuisines.

Use Flavor Profiles to explore new food!

This technique you may ask is called ‘Flavor Profiles.’

What is Flavor Profiles (FPs)?…
In essence, FPs are used as a guide and allow you to take what you have on-hand and create amazing meals. Let’s say you want to go to Italy for the evening, with your food that is. You would look in your pantry and refrigerator and gather things that most Italian cuisine consists of: Tomatoes, pasta, basil, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, crushed red pepper, bell peppers, sausage, and parsley. Then using simple culinary techniques or a recipe as a guide will create a masterpiece.

Why should I use Flavor Profiles?
FPs allow you to BYOC and who doesn’t want to be a chef in their own home! Also, using FPs allow you to save money. Think about it, you use ingredients that you have.

ELS-ers, using Flavor Profiles allow you to BYOC and really explore cuisine and food.

So what are you cooking this evening? Let us know below or join the convo!

Wander out in Raleigh

ELS-ers it is that time again….First Friday! I LOVE First Friday because I get to enjoy Downtown Raleigh’s art, food, and shopping scene for free or a heavy discount.

Last month, I enjoyed the art scene at Artspace and Morning Times.

Take a look at the First Friday guide and use it to ‘map’ out your evening. Getting downtown on public transportation is highly recommended because parking is no bueno Downtown. All CAT buses go downtown and let you off at Moore Square right in the center of the action.

On Friday, November 4th, wander out and enjoy Downtown Raleigh!

Save.: Coupon the ELS way

Ever watch TLC’s Extreme Couponing and think to yourself, “that is a little to extreme.” Well ELS-ers, I had the same thoughts and that is the reason for this post.

I coupon for MY household and not for ‘the sale.’ I buy things that I know we will use each week and stockpile things that will last over time like: toilet paper, deodorant, and toothpaste. I have $130 that I spend a month on groceries and I use coupons to help drive my grocery bill down every week.

Coupons are your WIN at checkout!

Coupons intimidated me in the beginning and I found myself spending hours in the store wasting time because I did not know what I was doing! Then I found the Krazy Coupon Lady and everything began to make sense. There is an entire section of the site dedicated to the “Coupon Virgin.” Check it out and tailor the information to your needs.

Couponing is my game, a game that I always win! ELS-ers start playing the coupon game and see how much you win.

Eat.: Fun at Local Yogurt

I have a confession…I am a frozen treat SNOB! I LOVE them all but I can not get enough frozen yogurt especially from my go-to spot in Durham Local Yogurt.

Visit Local Yogurt in Durham!

LoYo is Durham’s first locally owned and operated frozen yogurt shop that offers toppings from local vendors and farms. LoYo is located on 2501 University Dr in Durham and accessible by the DATA bus.

You are welcomed by bright orange and green walls when you first enter LoYo. The space is open with plenty of room to sit and enjoy the frozen masterpiece you create. The employees are all welcoming and knowledgeable. The four daily flavors along with the toppings are written on a chalkboard taking me to my days in elementary school! One can even taste the flavors before deciding what to get. If you love toppings LoYo does not disappoint, they have something for all taste buds and even exotic toppings for the adventurous folks in the crowd. LoYo has daily specials perfect for ELS-ers!

I stick to what I know: a medium original and chocolate mix with strawberries, health bar and almonds that should be named ‘The Resa’! Original has a plain tangy yogurt taste but with the chocolate is perfect. The toppings rotate so let the staff know what to see!

Supporting local businesses is the way to go. ELS-ers get to LoYo…you will thank me later!

What will be your LoYo masterpiece?
